But not to buy a fat pig. More like to keep my kids from becoming fat pigs. This is what my facebook status read on Monday: new goal for the summer as of this morning: get these children of mine to eat vegetables. You know, the good stuff that comes straight from God’s green earth. Heading to The Farmer’s Market with Rebecca and the kids and then to Tomlinson’s for pretty, summery stuff to put it all in. I WILL win this battle. 🙂
I am SICK of Mak and CB’s diets. They stink. CB’s more than Mak’s, but his really isn’t great. Right now they are both teeny little wisps with not an ounce of fat on either of them. Neither one can keep their pants up unless they are adjustable waist. So I guess it’s not childhood obesity or anything like that that concerns me. It’s just that they put almost NOTHING of any nutritional substance into their bodies. You know what CB’s favorite food is? Chicken. Well that’s not so bad, you say. Just wait, it gets better. When she says chicken she actually means fried chicken fingers. But the only part of the chicken finger that she really consumes is…wait for it…the brown crunchy part. Yep, that’s my girl! She picks the fried crunchy stuff off of the chicken and eats it. Mak’s not much better. His favorite food is a cheeseburger. And he can eat an entire adult size pita burger from The Drive In. He does at least eat the lettuce and tomato that are on it as well, but for real, he’s just SIX. How will I ever fill this boy up when he is a teenager?
So on Monday I had had it. Momma put her foot down. The thing that pushed me over the edge was when Miss CB pitched a sweet little fussy fit when I refused to allow her to eat fruit chews and chocolate pudding for breakfast. My sister-in-law, Rebecca asked me if I wanted to join her on a trip to The Farmer’s Market and I got SO Excited. The prospect of putting REAL vegetables grown in local soil into their little bodies had me giddy. So off we went. And we even had FUN doing it…
See, Rebecca knows what she’s doing when it comes to “real” vegetables…you know, the fresh stuff, not from a can. I do not. I needed her help. 🙂
Miss CB pickin’ some peaches…
and plums…
And the CUTEST little things in the Farmer’s Market (Mom also joined us with Caroline!). These images make me laugh!
CB wanted to hold Tess’s hand…
Tal didn’t like it so he poked her in the eye…
CB switched sides…
And Tess is OFF!!! LOVE them!!!
I asked Tal to pick his favorite thing and I would take his picture with it. He picked melons. There’s so much I could say…I won’t. 😉
Ahhhh…the LOVE. It oozes out of this picture, doesn’t it?
LOVE. BOYS. I just do.
Possibly my favorite picture I’ve ever taken of Tess…Girlie is Always on the move!
My Baby Girl. 🙂
So then we got home and the real test began. I am proud to say that my kids ate home cooked meals every night last week. NO eating out. Okay, so one night they had cereal but at least it wasn’t the crunchy stuff off of the chicken finger, right? I started with a caprese salad…CB HATED it, Mak and Collin and I loved it. Green Beans…HUGE hit…everyone gobbled them up and CB even asked for more AFTER her dessert. A true miracle, it was! We have consumed berries, corn, mango, cucumbers, squash…And I think I might be winning this war!!!
We will be making a new trip to The Farmer’s Market this week and I really hope this is the start of a lifestyle change for my littles. I love them!! I’ll keep you posted…because I know you’re all on the edge of your seat…;)
LOVE the images of the fruits and veggies!!! I need to get over there more often, it’s right around the corner from my office. Good luck with the menu 🙂
Love all the pictures of the produce–so pretty! Reminds me of summer . . .
This post CRACKED ME UP!!! LOVE IT!! LOVE all the cousin love these kids have for each other!!
Not fair – I have tried everything to get the 3 year old to eat any vegetable or fruit. All he will eat is mac & cheese and chicken nuggets. (he does eat the chicken though.) I’ve been to the farmers market with him but he still won’t eat it once it’s home. hmmm.
I love the cousin pics. They made me laugh out loud. So cute! And it reminded me that I need to get out to the Farmer’s Market too.
The Farmers Market excites me too! All the beautiful, bright colored veggies and fruit! Yum! Also makes you just feel good knowing you are supporting local farming families! We’ve been on the same quest for a better diet with our kids since last year. It has taken some time, but it has improved! There is hope! In the beginning, I dreaded dinnertime, because I knew it would be a battle. And it was, but we stayed consistent. It wasn’t overnight or even over a few weeks. It is not a complete balanced diet, but we have come a long way. I’ve tried to incorporate dinner theme nights…we might decorate a little, dress up a little (served grilled fish and it was Under the Sea night with Ariel), etc… Best of luck to you…you can do it!!
Hope, I LOVE the themed night idea! Will definitely be using that! Thanks!
